Autophagy is one of the intracellular proteolytic mechanisms related to programmed cell death and several disease. Professor Emeritus Yoshinori Ohsumi of Tokyo Institute of Technology, who elucidated the mechanism of autophagy, won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2016.
